Petra's Dark & Dreamy: Gothic Sleep Stories & Macabre Verse

DAY 8 ~ALL HALLOWS EVE COUNTDOWN~ GOBLIN MARKET, Christina Rosetti

Petra Season 1 Episode 37

“Goblin Market,” written by Christina Rossetti in 1862, is a narrative poem about two sisters, Laura and Lizzie, who encounter goblin merchants selling tempting, forbidden fruit. Laura succumbs to the goblins’ lure, eats the fruit, and soon falls into despair and decline. Lizzie bravely confronts the goblins, resists their attacks, and returns with the fruit’s juices to heal her sister. The poem blends fairy tale, temptation, and redemption themes, often interpreted as an allegory for sisterhood, sacrifice, and moral strength in the face of desire.
