In H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness, Chapter 4 shifts from scientific curiosity to horror. Dyer describes the aftermath of a deadly catastrophe at Lake’s camp—his men and sled dogs are found mutilated, and the mysterious black stone structures loom over the site. The strange barrel-shaped fossils appear to have vanished, hinting they weren’t as lifeless as once believed. Amid torn tents, scattered supplies, and grotesque remains, the survivors realize they’ve uncovered forces far beyond human understanding. Suspicion hardens into terror, and the Antarctic silence becomes almost unbearable.
