In Book Two, Chapter Two of H.G. Wells's "The War of the Worlds, titled "What We Saw from the Ruined House," the narrator and the curate are trapped in a partially destroyed house near the Martians’ cylinder. From their hiding spot, they secretly observe the Martians and their machinery. The narrator describes the aliens’ strange behavior, how they feed by extracting blood from humans, and how their machines operate. The tension builds as they realize how vulnerable they are, just feet away from these terrifying, intelligent invaders.
