In Chapters 10 and 11 of The War of the Worlds, the narrator continues to witness the Martian invasion's destructive force. Chapter 10 sees the narrator and his wife trying to escape the devastation, as Martian tripods use their heat-rays to obliterate the countryside. The narrator reflects on the hopelessness of resisting the Martians, who are far more advanced than humanity. In Chapter 11, the narrator is separated from his wife during their frantic flight. He finds refuge with others but is increasingly overwhelmed by the growing destruction and the realization that the Martians are nearly unstoppable in their conquest.
